Today we’ll have a two-parts tutorial, but both parts are going to be very simple. Since you can see the result below, I won’t add anything else at this time, apart from “start up your Photoshop and prepare for the lesson”…

Pattern Overlay

Creating the pattern

1. Create a new document, and be sure to use the settings below.

Pattern Overlay

2. Press B and select the Pencil Tool, if you worked with the Brush last time. Draw a black line to fill the upper half of your document (you could use the Rectangular Selection Tool, together with the Paint Bucket, if that seems easier).

3. Now, we need to save this as a pattern. Go to Edit>Define Pattern, give it a name, and close the document.

Pattern Overlay

Using the pattern on the picture

1. Open the photo you want to work on.

2. Add a new layer to the document, and select the Paint Bucket Tool.

Pattern Overlay

3. Select the pattern we have just created, as you can see in the screenshot below.

4. Fill the image using the pattern, and then decrease the opacity of the layer containing the pattern.

This is it!
