There are lots of tutorials about making a planet, but most of them are very difficult for the beginner in Photoshop. This one is actually easy and simple so that even a beginner can achieve the result desired.
2. It looks a bit flat, doesn’t it? Go to Filters ->Distort -> Spherize and set the value to 100%. Now it’s starting to look like a real planet.

3. Make a new layer (Layer -> New -> Layer) and be sure to hold the selection. Fill with whatever colour you want and change Fill on the layer palette to 0%. Now open the Blending Options and add Inner and Outer Glow (for Inner Glow i set the Opacity to 75% and the Size to 100 pixels, and for Outer Glow the Opacity to 60% and the Size to 25).

4. To finish we have to add the shadow, so make a new layer and with a soft brush darken the side where there should be no light. Change the opacity of the layer to about 90% and you’re done.

You need to get rid of the glow where the shadow is for it to look more realistic, To do that, On the layer with the outer and inner glow right click on that layer and click on Group into new smart object then right click again and rasterize, Or you can simpy make a new layer above it and select that layer along with the glow layer and right click/merge. Then with a soft eraser erase the glow where the shadow is.
Nice tut
Great tutorial, i used the lens flare filter at then end and it came out great. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p13/sutton_29/planet3.jpg

I really like the picture. I think the shadow astonishing although I think Bassiks is right to say that there should be no glow where the shadow is. And also I would like to ask for the permission of the creator to use this pic as background of my gaming site. It would be great if you could e-mail me at db1767961@yahoo.com !
Thanks,

I did all the steps for the planet and i did not get the outer or inner glow!! It didn’t work. You are very vague with that step or something because it didn’t work. I changed the opacity of the last layer to 90 and nothing happened. I need help!!!! None of this worked. You need better steps or something. PLease someone give a tutorial that actually works. And i don’t get layers!!!!!!
You’re not right about the glow. Sometimes you can see the entire glow line of a planet (the atmosphere) and still see the shadowed side of the planet. This happends if the sun is larger than the planet, and of course you have to be looking from a certain point to see it.
Anyway , it looks beautiful.
